Welcome to my new professional decorating service RickRutherfordDesign.

For more than 25 years I have worked in the home interiors industry – as the author and editor of several of the nation’s leading home decorating titles, and as the owner of a renowned heritage retail store in the NSW Blue Mountains.

Over this time I have also been involved in helping customers and clients decorate and improve their properties – from one small space to entire homes.

Most recently I have been commissioned to give ‘heart and warmth’ to various Blue Mountains’ properties, doing so to add personal improvements for the benefit of long term owners, as well as enhancing investment potential and even profitability for sale. By adding vintage and contemporary furnishings, upgrading colours and finishes, decorative treatments and even garden and verandah accessories, I have delighted in creating an overall cohesive vision with styling choices to enhance and add comfort, character and value.

And now, for the first time, I’m delighted to offer these services to a wider audience through the creation of my new business RickRutherfordDesign. Servicing home owners throughout the greater Blue Mountains region, the aim of the business is to offer professional design and decorating services to all those wanting to make the most of the place they call home … whether the objective be to create from scratch, an update existing residence or ultimately to achieve optimum funds when sold.

My approach has been honed over nearly three decades of being actively involved in the home improvement and decorating industry. Over the years my objective when updating a house has always been to use what one has, drawing on existing home furnishings and accessories and working from here to make a home feel like one’s own. The process also means minimising expense. The aim is to ‘work cleverly’ and celebrate what one has in new and interesting ways. By moving existing furnishings around, creating focal points with paint treatments, using design innovations and adding new decorator pieces such as furniture, textiles and accessories – it’s amazing what can be achieved to create new looks and add functionality to a space. Even the garden can benefit from such simple yet impacting treatments.
